Anacostia Waterfront Initiative: Framework Plan & Land Exchange

Can a polluted river catalyze innovative 21st Century urban investment in ? 

The Anacostia Waterfront Initiative (AWI) Framework Plan is a multi-billion dollar urban revitalization effort to restore the ecology of the Anacostia River and transform 2,800 acres (1,100 hectares) of neglected waterfront lands into engines of community development. The effort includes the exchange of hundreds of acres of public lands between the federal government and the District of Columbia to advance the goals of the plan.  By prioritizing participatory planning and environmental restoration, the AWI positions the Anacostia River as a great civic destination and the center of urban investment in 21st Century Washington, DC.  The AWI has received national and international recognition by the American Planning Association, the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Urban Land Institute and the World Bank.

Responsibilities included managing intergovernmental coordination, stakeholder engagement, urban planning, design management, and land ownership exchange. Completed while serving as Associate Director, DC Office of Planning and Vice President, Director of Planning & Capital Projects, Anacostia Waterfront Corporation, 2000-2007.  Collaborators include Chan Krieger Associates, HR&A, and WRT Design among many, many others.
